Fine particulate matter (<2.5pm)

Where there's smoke, there's PM 2.5. These microscopic particles are primarily caused by burning fuel, wood, oil and coal. The 2.5 refers to the maximum microns in diameter of each particle, about 1/20th the thickness of an average human hair.

  • PM 2.5 can be found both indoors and outdoors. Levels tend to be higher where air is stagnant.
  • Wind can carry PM 2.5 miles away from the particles source.
  • For every PM particle you can see, there are 1 million invisible particles that are small enough to enter pores. 

Inhalable particulate matter (<10pm)

PM 10 is typically a mixture of dust, soot, smoke, acids, salts and metals. The 10 refers to the maximum microns in diameter of each particle, about 1/5th the thickness of an average human hair.

  • Motor vehicles, fire, construction, factories and agriculture are major sources of PM 10.
  • Air pollution from traffic and soot can increase pigmentation spots by 20%.

Nitrogen dioxide

This chemical compound comes from burning fossil fuels as well as combustion related to energy or industrial production. Natural burning also plays a role. At higher temperatures, NO2 emits a reddish-brown color and a pungent odor.

  • Most of the nitrogen dioxide found in cities comes from motor vehicle exhaust.
  • Gas-powered heat is a major source of Nitrogen dioxide in homes.
  • Nitrogen dioxide can generate free radicals that degrade amino acids and protective lipids in the skin.

Ozone

The main ingredient in "smog", ground-level ozone is formed by chemical reactions that occur to emissions from industrial facilities, electrical facilities, motor vehicle exhaust, gasoline, paint and chemical solvents.

  • Ground-level ozone is different from the ozone in the stratosphere that shields us from the sun's harmful rays.
